Chapter 1 (NW)

Kwon Ji-Nie is the granddaughter of Kwon Jae-Kyu and a member of the Sun-Woo Clan. She is assigned by him to be Lee Shi-Woon's hidden bodyguard, in order to protect him from people within the Murim-In.

Appearance[]

Ji-Nie is a young, and quite tall, girl with messy, shoulder-length crimson hair, and mainly dresses in punk fashion. Initially and generally, she would have a neck-belt surrounding her neck, short jeans shorts, and a leather coat/jacket around a white T-Shirt. Although she is seen with other kinds of clothes throughout the series. Many people may regard her hair not to be natural, though in contrary, it actually is. She has been remarked, in more than one occasion, as "quite attractive" and "cute."

Ji-Nie is of mixed lineage (her mother was Korean and her father is American), and she got her unique hair color from her father.[1] While not much is known about Ji-Nie's father, it's hinted that he may be of Jewish descent, as Jinie is constantly seen wearing the Star of David necklace around her neck.

When training she wears her Sun-Woo Clan robes and leaves the top of it open exposing her open chest.

Personality[]

Ji-Nie is a short tempered tomboy who seems to be only capable of solving her problems by fighting. Jin-Ie is quite unsociable due to how people treat her because of her hair color. They either ask her if she dyed her hair or avoid her because they think she is trouble even calling her a delinquent. When she talks to Shi-Woon about it, she says it annoys her as her hair color and style is natural. Through several occasions, many types of people have commented that if it wasn't for this sharp personality of hers, she could be seen "cuter and more attractive." Despite such a sharp and independently violent personality, she has been shown to be sincerely thankful if helped enough, first seen with Shi-Woon's actions, and later, when Yoo Ji-Gun saved her life during a turmoil situation in her life-time. At first she was completely annoyed to be Shi-Woon's bodyguard and displayed a hatred for him, even if he would show actions of sincerity, she would see such actions as a sign of pity. However, she later seems to have developed a crush on him. Indeed, it's quite clear that over the short time they have spent together, she has developed feelings for him. This is especially evident when she appears to grow jealous when Shi-Woon's attention is focused to Sae-Hee. Eventually, it would truly show that her feelings towards Shi-Woon have grown to love, as she had realized and witnessed on several occasions that Shi-Woon would "try, in his greatest attempts, to rescue her, if she would ever be in a dire state of trouble." Still to this day, though, she would still threaten Shi-Woon in certain situations if annoyed.

She also has a strange habit of being drawn to him when he is asleep and tries to kiss him, but is interrupted or stops herself before anything happens. She has also developed a very protective nature towards Shi-Woon due to her deep feelings for him. She yells at those who could help him but won't and went so far as to call Sae-Ra an "emotionless bitch" when she assumed the latter would not want to help Shi-Woon, who was in danger at the time. Now, whenever Shi-Woon would be caught in trouble, she would always return the feelings Shi-Woon would give to her, as in, not only because it is her duty and job, but as a true friend, to protect and save him at her best of costs.

She appeared to be very frightened of her grandfather, who often voiced his utter disgust to her and her late mother, claiming they were both failed to him. At the same time, though, she has shown vigorous loyalty to him. When her mother died, Jinie was taken in by her grandfather, who gave her everything when she thought she had lost everything. The old man reminded her of that, and her fear and loyalty was brought into mind. So when he ordered her to kill Shi-Woon, she was almost able to do it. But Shi-Woon was saved by the call he got from his mother, and Ji-Nie's resolve and growing feelings were blocking her path to kill Shi-Woon.

She has two friends within the Sun-Woo Clan: Han Dae-San and Kang Ha-Il, the latter whom she often argues with and scolds. Through the time Ha-Ill and Ji-Nie have had, their arguments would start once Ha-Ill would begin to mock or imitate her actions into jokes, thus having Jinie angered enough to yell and threaten him.

She also dislikes how Lee Gyoo-Bum would have slick plans involving her, and in more than one occasion, would call him a "sly fox."

She is also seen to dislike, and most of all fear, the path and feeling of loneliness. This had probably begun after her mother, who she had been so close and powerfully attached to died. Thus leaving her alone for a long time, without anyone to help her. She had then felt this pain after running away from everyone, as she was unable to follow her grandfather's orders to kill Shi-Woon. Crying every day and staying independent, she was stuck in turmoil, only to be eventually saved by Ji-Gun. This would also reveal how much love she had for her mother, commenting once that she would always be happy because she was there for her, and only needed her.

Because of her personality while fighting in her school uniform she doesn't care if her underwear is seen.

After her grandfather was killed by Goomoonryong she began to questioned if he very loved her but after gaining the book of his martial arts left to her, it gave her the will to stand and become just as strong as he was.

Techniques & Abilities[]

Don't take her lightly. She's not someone I can just go and defeat.
— Kang Sae-Ra about Jin-Ie's skill.

Abilities[]

  • Expert Martial Artist (Kwon style): According to Elder Min Sa-Oak, Jinie's fighting style is not one widely taught in the Sun-Woo Clan, but was instead taught to her by her grandfather for the express purpose of one day inheriting his techniques. Her style revolves mainly around quick, powerful kicks utilizing her long legs. She has shown herself able to perform acrobatic jumps and flips, but nowhere near the level of many master level artists. She also has impressive reflexes being able to see through the movements of high level fighters. Her attacks are also difficult to read and counter due to her overall flexibility. After the near death experience she had with the S.U.C she began to train with new vigor and her martial arts skills jumped to another level. After the death of her grandfather, Jinie began training in the use of his personal techniques when Elder Min Sa-Oak gave her the book containing his techniques and martial arts.
  • Calm Ignition Ki Center Techniques: Ji-Nie unknowingly mastered these techniques over the course of her traning with the Sun-Woo Clan. Not much is known about them, only that they are vital for mastering the techniques employed in Kwon Jae-Kyu's style of martial arts. Twelve years of training in Calm Ignition are needed to to be able to learn Kwon's style.
  • Untapped Potential: According to Ha-Il Gang, Jinie possesses a large amount of untapped potential. With access to his techniques and enough time, Jinie may be able to attain a level of skill comparable to her grandfather.
  • Ton-fa Skill: When up against an enemy with a bladed weapon Ji-Nie created a make-shift pair of ton-fa from a broken chair and was able to fight on par with a master level opponent even though she ultimately lost. Her skill with the ton-fa imply that she has had some training with them.[2]

Techniques[]

  • Heaven-Shaking Thunder Strike: Currently the highest level named attack in the series, referred to as a 9 Star Technique. The martial art is a punch that when pulled off correctly can completely disintegrate it's target. It is part of Kwon Jae-Kyu's personal martial arts.[3]
  • Phoenix Wing Whip (Bong Hwang Pyun Ik): This is a personal technique from her grandfather's own martial arts that Ji-Nie inherited upon his death. It involves swinging the user's arm in a whip-like fashion that can either repel or break objects. Instead of swinging her arm in a downward motion like her grandfather, Ji-Nie folds her arms in a cross formation and then swings both arms outward. With this technique Jinie was able to repel an attack performed by master-level fighter Jae-gal.[4]
  • Soaring Phoenix, Ascending Heaven Kick: Jinie performs this attack against Julia in a fit of rage after Lee Shi-Woon is stabbed in the Impermanent Prison.[5]
  • Thunderbolt Strike (Nweh Gyuk Gwon): A technique where the user moves up a shear vertical surface and then dropping from the surface to build up momentum and attacks the opponent with a fist strike, the resulting air pressure from the drop preventing the target from moving. This technique appears to harm her, as she has yet to master it.[6]

Relationships[]

Family[]

Other than her father, it has been seen that her bonds with the others are strong or complicated.

  • Kwon Jae-Kyu: Ji-Nie's grandfather from her mother's side, he is the second-in-command of the Sun-Woo Clan. When left into helpless loneliness, he adopted Jinie and greeted her to the Sun-Woo Clan, and, eventually, making her a relevant member, teaching her martial arts. Later on, she finds out that he was disappointed at her mother, and does not want Jinie to do the same, in which the young girl promises. Later on, though, she has been seen to give a fearful vibe when hearing Elder Kwon disappointed at her. But her loyalty to him is still evident, and is almost unfavorable. Today, though, their bond had truly begun, as Elder Kwon would risk his life and kill all threats opposing her. After her grandfather was killed by Chun-Woo, she recklessly tries to jump out of a helicopter. This shows that she cares for him dearly.
  • Kwon Hae-Jin : Ji-Nie's mother, she has been shown in the past as a little child to truly care and love her mother to a powerful and immovable extent, since she had always been there for her. Thus, once she had died, Ji-Nie was left alone in loneliness, with nobody to look up to and count on for, since her father is nowhere to be found.

Friends and Allies[]

She has had bonds before the series, as well as grown bonds throughout the series.

  • Lee Shi-Woon: Initially, she did not want any business with him, scolding him for everything he did, even if they were intentionally helpful. As the series progresses, they, go through experiences of protecting one another at all costs to the point of risking thier lifes. She has shown to be ridiculously worried for his well-being even if he's in danger.
  • Kang Ha-Il: The two have seemed to know each other for a long and close extent, probably once she was adopted into the Sun-Woo Clan. The two generally argue at several occasions, with the man teasing, mocking, or joking about her actions in order to push her into scolding at him. It would be without surprise if their bond would seem closer than this. They seem to have a big brother, little sister relationship one that Ha-II transfer to her from her mother.
  • Yoo Ji-Gun : Originally enemies, they eventually grew a bond after Ji-Gun had saved her from Dark Princess. Later on, though, Ji-Gun would act no different than Kang Ha-Il towards Jinie, teasing her to an extent that would make her yell at him.
  • Lee Gyoo-Bum: Seemingly the two have had some connection, as she has been seen to always call him a "sly fox" for his actions, thoughts, and plans towards her.
  • Han Dae-San: The two seem to share a friendship, as he had helped her out with Kang Ha-Il before.

Enemies[]

In the process of protecting Shi-Woon, as his bodyguard, she has come in various conflicts with the S.U.C

  • Soldiers Under Command: As enemies of Shi-Woon, it is initial that they are enemies of Jinie. They have eventually tried chasing after her by orders from Dark Princess before, running about in the entire town.
  • Lee Ji-Yoo: A member of the five S.U.C Captains, they first crossed roads with each other when Jinie interrupted her battle against Ji-Gun. Angered, she killed the stray cat that followed Ji-Nie, thus enraging her. Dark Princess would chase her later on in order to kill her for revenge, and in at least 5 situations, they would battle.
